Parliamentary spokesperson for Oldham West & Royton, Cllr Mark Alcock, is appalled that Firefighters in Oldham were pelted with missiles by a gang of youths in a second attack this month.

Cllr Mark Alcock said:

This incident came as the Fire Brigades' Union said the number of violent assaults on crews had increased, with Firefighters bricked, stabbed, spat at, threatened and abused on a regular basis.

The North-West has the highest number of recorded attacks on crews, with 462 in the region in 2006-07, but the union believes the true figure is much higher as many go unreported.

'Fire fighters risk their lives every day in their work on our behalf. To think that they are also under threat by this type of anti-social behaviour is astonishing. The Union states ambushing, shootings and stabbings are not uncommon. It is deplorable.

'We must ensure that we continue to give our full support to the Union, and provide greater protection to our fire crews.'
