Lib Dem Mark Alcock attacks Labour's Knee Jerk Laws

Police on the Beat

We need more bobbies on the beat.

Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson for Oldham West & Royton, Mark Alcock have attacked the Labour government for shovelling through 3,600 new criminal offences since 1997, without proper scrutiny or consideration for the additional bureaucratic burden it places on police officers.

Mark Alcock, said, "Some of these offences are clearly covered by existing legislation, while others seem some what bizarre.

"For example, under Labour it is an offence to disturb a pack of eggs, it is an offence to sell a grey squirrel and it is an offence to impersonate a traffic warden!

"And the offence of causing a nuclear explosion, introduced by Labour in 1998, is totally unnecessary - surely anyone setting off a nuclear explosion is already breaking pre-existing murder and terrorism laws?

"This mountain of unnecessary new legislation is very damaging, burdening our already overstretched police with extra paperwork and bureaucracy.

"When faced with a problem, Labour instinctively think that making another knee jerk reaction and making more new laws will solve everything, when in fact they should be concentrating on using the existing laws by putting more Police Officers on the streets of Oldham Borough to implement them."
