Oldham district Liberal Democrats has praised an attempt by a Lib Dem MP to reform the law which prevents the monarch from marrying a Catholic.
The 1701 Act of Settlement barred those who marry a Catholic from becoming King or Queen.
Evan Harris MP is introducing a Private Member's Bill in an attempt to end centuries of discrimination. The proposed legislation would also allow women the right of succession, but would keep the monarch as the head of the Church of England.
Mark Alcock, Parliamentary Spokesperson for Oldham West & Royton, said, "I don't know what chance there is of a lady from Oldham Borough meeting Prince William or Harry, but if they do get lucky then they shouldn't have to give up their Catholic faith in order get married.
"This is a very sensible and balanced proposal which would end discrimination without damaging our nation's great religious and royal traditions."
