Nick Clegg launches Green Road out of the recession - Alcock

Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg has unveiled plans to get Britain out of the recession by cutting taxes, creating jobs and saving energy. The Lib Dem plans would mean a big cut in income tax for hardworking local families and a big investment in environmental measures, which create jobs and get the economy moving again. The Liberal Democrats are the only party to propose cuts in income tax for hardworking families.

The Lib Dem plans include:

Income tax cuts for hardworking local people

A five-year programme to insulate every school and hospital, with 20% completed in the first year

Funding insulation and energy efficiency for a million homes, with a £1,000 subsidy for a million more

Buying 700 new train carriages

Reopening old railway lines and stations and opening new ones

Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg said, "As the recession deepens, every day we hear news of more workers being laid off, more families struggling with bills and more elderly and vulnerable people plunged into fuel poverty.

These are real, achievable goals that would make a real difference to people's lives now, create new jobs today, and leave us with the infrastructure for a long-term, green economic recovery."

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Oldham West & Royton, Mark Alcock, said, "Everybody across Oldham Borough is feeling the pinch in these uncertain times. The Lib Dem plans would put more money in local peoples' pockets, stimulate the economy and help protect the environment. Only the Liberal Democrats are calling for cuts in income tax for hardworking local people."
