Figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats show that 7,322 criminals Fail to Appear warrants were issued by courts in Greater Manchester in 2007.

A total of 718 of these were in the Oldham area.

Mark Alcock, Lib Dem spokesperson for Oldham West & Royton, said, "These shocking figures show that despite claims of being tough on law and order, Labour are nothing of the sort.

"Labour have left the country short on prison places, so people who at one time would have been remanded in custody are being let out on bail, and are able to cock a snoop at the law."
