INNOCENTS TO REMAIN ON DNA DATABASE FOR SIX YEARS - Alcock

11.26.00pm GMT Wed 18th Nov 2009

Commenting on the Government's decision to retain profiles of innocent people on the DNA Database for six years, rather than the twelve years announced previously, Shadow Liberal Democrat MP for Oldham West & Royton including Chadderton, Mark Alcock said:

"This is yet another disgraceful decision from a Government keen to set up Big Brother Britain.

"Their new plans are little better than the last, hoarding innocent people's DNA in defiance of the courts.

"One of my constituents came to me to ask for help to remove his profile from the database, after she had been falsely accused of a minor offence. It is neither fair nor sensible that she and the other 125,000 innocent people on the database from the North West should have their privacy compromised.

"If they want the whole country to have fingerprints and DNA on record they should have the guts to say so. If not, they need to learn the difference between innocence and guilt, and learn it quickly."
